HBCU Trek is a project I began as an undergraduate student at Tennessee’s only public Black college, Tennessee State University. Since experiencing my first HBCU, I ventured to Fisk and then Meharry Medical College: years later my voyage continues. My ongoing mission: to explore all 106 Historically Black Colleges and Universities, to seek out each institution’s strengths and new opportunities for HBCUs to partner, to boldly go where most people have never gone before.
Most of my treks are solo missions; however, from time to time I am blessed with the company of fellow HBCU enthusiasts. We venture to HBCUs simply looking forward to learning more about the individual institutions and to have a good time. A lot of the trips are unplanned, so there is no telling what is going to happen. HBCU Trek has run into International Festivals, Homecoming events, met with college presidents, and simply walked around the campus alone in the middle of the night during a break with no one on the grounds except security personnel. Data is not being collected for a study. The photos and images captured on the trek are not staged, many of them are completely candid, and are fully governed by the interest and intrigue of those on the trip.
This site is a result of a suggestion of a staff member at an HBCU in Pennsylvania, the interest expressed by friends on social media, and the requests of the youth at churches and community centers. The brief blurbs and blog posts on HBCU Trek are intended to provide a glimpse at America’s Black Colleges, introduce youth to HBCUs states away from their homes via unofficial mini-campus tours, and to share the beauty, camaraderie, and power inherent in all HBCUs.
…long story short, HBCU Trek aims to share HBCU love.
I think this is a very interesting undertaking to tour all HBCUs. You stopped by Morris College in Sumter, South Carolina today and I was fortunate enough to meet you. As I told you in our conversation, I do believe that your journey or Trek could lead to a book. I would love to read such a book if and when you decide to write about your Trek. Please keep me in mind if/when that book comes to pass. It would be a pleasure to read all about your journey. Safe travels to you as you continue to “go where most people have never gone before”.
Love your website! I’m using it in my personal endeavor to promote the nation’s HBCUs!
Thank you for the comment. I am glad you are finding the website helpful! Let me know if I can be of further help or if you have any suggestions on modifications to the site to assist with your promotion of our institutions.
